This one didn't really captivate me, not even as a black and white version. During the moments when there was no talking, it was creepy, but I never really found it scary, more like laughable. The plot is particularly weak, the acting performances downright horrendous. I understand that later horror films have found their inspiration here, but this one has not stood the test of time for me. A beautiful lead actress, but just like the rest, her acting is mediocre to bad.

Not for me.

Carnival of Souls. An older horror film that I also really needed to see. It is one of the umpteenth titles where I made the mistake of putting on the remake first. Fortunately, in this case it doesn't matter that much, because I don't remember much of the remake. I don't even recognize anything of it in this film.

This film starts off quite intriguing by opening with a car chase that is shot quite well for that time. It provides a nice sequence that ends satisfyingly and mysteriously. It gives the film some fodder to open well. Then, after 10 minutes have passed, the film takes on a somewhat different tone.

The sad thing about the film is that it eventually drops the horror elements and focuses more on mystery and drama, only then supported by crew members who are completely useless. It's all serious viewing, sometimes shedding a tear and otherwise forcing the dialogues out in an unnatural way. You don't impress me with it.

In between, the film has some atmospheric and ominous images, but once the plot and development of it are really pushed forward, those aforementioned images have less and less effect. In my opinion, the ambitious title never gets the elaboration it deserves. I think I found that to work a lot better in the remake, because I can't do much with this. So the grade is also there, because I don't have much more to say.

I wouldn't call this pure horror. But a very atmospheric film with a mysterious approach and vibe. Great cinematography and good casting of Candace Hilligoss who draws attention to herself with her piercing eyes. Great sound too which absolutely benefited the whole.

I didn't always find it clear because dreams and reality were played with. I didn't really know the film beforehand. Not all expectations were met. Difficult to judge for me. It's somewhere in between. The points go more to the technical aspect than to the plot.
