Nice, but every time a decent suspense is built up, it's then ruined by enormous clichés and predictable progression. A shame, because the first part, in particular, is quite exciting at times. The ending is abysmal.

2*

Another one of those titles I used to see in video stores all the time... but always passed up. I'd rather go 25 times for the similar Monster Man (2003). Anyway, a solid thriller with a tried-and-true concept, but the latter, oddly enough, does the film more good than harm. At least it offers Murlowski some grounding (reference material). Based on the rest of his oeuvre, I didn't have the highest expectations. Fine performances from the three young protagonists, but the villain and his accompanying twist are somewhat less successful/convincing.

My heart sank a bit when something along the lines of "based on true events" appeared on the screen at the start. Such a statement often guarantees an empty or predictable film. How pleasant, then, was the surprise when it quickly became clear that the three boys chased in their Saab by a black Cadillac weren't just one cliché after another. I even found myself enjoying myself. Not that this set a new high horror standard—it's not that good—but Black Cadillac is atmospheric and reasonably suspenseful.

The Cadillac acts like a kind of great white shark. A menacing presence, constantly appearing when you least expect it. For a long time, it's unclear whether the Cadillac is a self-driving threat or whether the car is being driven by something or someone. That question is only answered at the very end. Until then, it floats around. The uncertainty is a suspenseful element. When the threat occasionally subsides and the film slows down, there's entertaining banter, and old wounds and long-held secrets come into play.

The dialogue isn't annoying and gives the characters more depth than they normally get in an average horror film. Enough depth to make the characters somewhat interesting, but not enough to make them feel less like stereotypes. We have the hero, the clown, and the virgin. All perfectly crafted. A pleasant trio that makes for a satisfying experience.

The horror atmosphere is absolutely there. Dark woods. Deserted roads. Ominous headlights that appear and disappear. A strange hitchhiker. Pretty exciting. The explicit horror is absent. Don't expect splatter action. The body count is low. A decent running time, too. Just long enough to keep you captivated.
