Not nearly as good as the 1956 version, but entertaining enough.

The producers had River Phoenix in mind for the lead role. He turned down this offer several times, because he had no personal connection with the film. Diane Lane and Penelope Ann Miller also refused to play the lead role. The role of Ellen and Dorothy was originally supposed to be played by Bridget Fonda, but was replaced by Sean Young due to a busy work schedule. Young played 2 roles in this remake. This in contrast to Virginia Leith and Joanne Woodward from the original version. Sean Young won 2 awards, but the Razzies are not exactly a film award to be proud of. She was eventually awarded this one as a bad actress.

Less surprising than the original version, but fortunately it still manages to save itself thanks to a few scenes.

Nice movie about a woman investigating the suspected suicide of her sister. A fairly standard thriller with a fine story. Here and there it gets a bit monotonous, but the movie doesn't go on for too long. A few short, bloody moments and sometimes it gets quite exciting. Matt Dillon knows how to convince in a psychopathic role.

The story could have been so beautiful, but it is not beautifully told. And worse, the direction seriously fails. Dillon and Young were the up-and-coming actors at the time, but three quarters of the scenes are just bad, and I don't have the feeling that it is their fault. Only Max von Sydow escapes the drama a little, enough experience to not be bothered by a director perhaps. Dearden also has a nice list to his credit - nothing scores a convincing pass, and that can't be due to the talent of the cast when you see the names.

Pulling music in the soundtrack to top it off. Good for a rainy Sunday maybe, but it has to be raining really hard.
