Surrogates plot

"How do you save humanity when the only thing that's real is you?"

The story is set in the near future where humans lead an isolated existence. Interaction between humans takes place through surrogate robots, a prettier version of their human counterpart. FBI agents investigate the murder of a college student who has connections to the brain that once designed and built the high-tech robot. A conspiracy is soon discovered. This mystery causes some headaches as the robots are almost completely identical to their owners.

A somewhat underrated movie. The story is quite good, well told and with an interesting element as a basic element in the plot. Credible might not be the right word, but it's science fiction - also notice the last of those two words. The controversy between the 'real' people and the surrogates may be little explored, but it is certainly present - and also plays an important role, in retrospect.

In terms of images, it is very good to look at pictures, but there are some sloppiness in the stunts if you pay attention. But the fresh colors and the presence of Radha Mitchell and Rosamund Pike make up for a lot. Bruce Willis gets very little credit for his acting, but he does put down a pleasantly smooth action film. Nothing wrong with it. Not a candidate for the film top 100 perhaps, but pleasantly watchable craftsmanship.

Certainly a successful film, original premise with an interesting and challenging plot.

The elaboration, on the other hand, could have been much sharper to prevent storyholes,

That would have made the movie even better.

But the framework is sturdy and solid, which kept me captivated. *3.5

Don't think it's a bad movie. What starts as a classic flat-action intrigue ends a little deeper. I especially liked the ending, also because of the link with Tom's wife. The link with Avatar is clear, although one gets the social approach rather than the fairytale-like narration here. Although the subject is interesting, I also find it a bit unbelievable and the script does not excel in genius : why would people rather plug into a surrogate all day long than live their own lives? Besides wanting to draw a parallel with computer/internet addiction, I don't see many other answers either. Not everything is good but there are some strong elements and there is enough entertainment that certainly justify a 3*.
