Don't understand all those negative reactions, the film grabbed me from the first second, also beautiful landscape images of a so-called apocalyptic world. I also immediately got sympathy for the female robot Cleo (voiced by the wife of Antonio Banderas namely Melanie Griffith) I also liked the role of his film wife Birgitte Hjort Sørensen we all know her from the top series Borgen (TV Series 2010? ) - IMDb all in all a very successful SF film, so a big seven so 3.5*

Impressive sf based on the laws of robotics of Asimov.
The story is captivating and interesting and the portrayal of a bleak future is beautifully portrayed. Antonio Banderas shows once again what a class actor he is. On a positive note, however, the robots come across as in 'I Robot'. This is a must for the sf fan.

Ibáñez is really a few decades too late to come up with a film like this. Now AI is relevant again in the meantime. The first batch of films dates back to 20-30 years ago, when the idea really took shape cinematically for the first time, in the meantime the bar can be raised a little higher.
This movie clearly doesn't do that. We come back with the robot laws, the AI developing into something separate from humanity, the robot revolts and so on ... let's look at the implementation then? The robots look pretty cool, but that's about it. The worn out mode is boring and ugly, as if they've pulled the plug on Blade Runner town. Visually on the poor side, the soundtrack also doesn't really want to cooperate.
Banderas also dabbles a bit, luckily he was mainly acting opposite robots so that the average appearance per shot was not too bad. The rest of the cast is colorless and belonged earlier is a mediocre B-movie ... this film tries everything to not be that, unfortunately it doesn't come out well and what remains is a lifeless and chewed-out product.

Difficult to make an SF film (which is very fashionable these days to make it look nice and dystopian) without falling into clichés. Humanity destroying itself, artificial intelligence that surpasses humans, robots as the next evolutionary phase, that sort of thing. Weakness will also have to do with the fact that you as a viewer can hardly identify with Banderas; part has to do with the english language. The man simply has too little expression in English. In addition, a mixture of everything we've seen in movies like Blade Runner, Oblivion... with a raunchy shootout like a touch of Western. Too many loose ideas. Beautiful sets by the way.

In 2044, 99.7% of the human population will have died from the effects of climate change and a series of solar storms. To make the desert-turned planet habitable again for humanity, ROC Corporation has designed robots that adhere to two rules: they must not hurt people and they must not change themselves or each other. ROC enlists the help of insurance agent Jacq Vaucan [Antonio Banderas] after police officer Sean Wallace [Dylan McDermott] claims he had to destroy a robot for violating protocol 2. The setting is not very original and the story starts a bit slowly, but Ibáñez (who wrote the screenplay with Igor Legarreta and Javier Sánchez Donate) raises a number of interesting questions. Melanie Griffith plays a so-called 'clockmaker' who programs robots and also provides robot Cleo with a voice. And it's the convincingly functioning robots that steal the movie, especially in the intriguing finale. Javier Bardem can be heard as the blue robot.

Nice sci fi with its own style. It gets off to a slow start but gets interesting halfway through.
The base is borrowed from Asimov's robotic novels. He had come up with 3 robot laws to protect people against robots. Automata sticks to two:
1 robots should not harm life forms
2 robots are not allowed to modify themselves or other robots
Asimov had a 3rd law that had to give precedence to the previous two but made sure that robots protect themselves, also the robots had a duty to protect people, which caused conflicting interpretations of course and that's what his stories were based on.
Now it soon becomes apparent in Automata that there are robots that have been modified in such a way that they can repair themselves. So there must be a person behind it. A satisfactory answer how or why the robots have now only thrown the second protocol (they are not allowed to modify themselves or other robots) overboard, because apparently no human was behind it, but that first protocol is still being maintained[/spoiler ] unfortunately does not come. But interestingly, you're going to have feelings of compassion for the mechanical males and females. They are also very well done.
In terms of environment, very bleak and bare, we don't see an eye-pleasing Blade Runner-like future but have to make do with dark cities and withered sand plains. Still a budget issue I'm afraid.
Banderas does his best but I don't like it enough, prefer someone with more charisma.
But all in all a pretty good movie. And ultimately with a slightly more optimistic view of AI than we usually see.
