During World War II, newlyweds Sally Sawyer and Ira Enright are reluctantly separated again. Conscripted to join the war, Ira will spend the next three years fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific. While in the South Pacific, Ira learns that Sally has left him and given his son up for adoption. Ira didn't even know Sally was pregnant. Ira finally gets permission from his superiors to return home and he can count on the support of the good-natured Judge Boller.
