Tony Howard (Dirk Bogarde) and Anne Purves (Susan Stephen) want to get married, but Anne's father doesn't agree until Tony can find a good home for his bride. After a long search, they find a one-room flat. There the space is too small, the neighbors are an ordeal, the parents are constantly interfering and the budget is too meager. Can love really beat everything?
