Remains a pleasant experience even on a second viewing. Hallström mainly wants to have fun with Casanova, consciously keep it light. Those looking for some depth to the classic character should do something else. Occasionally close to satire and farcical, but fortunately remains on the right side of the line. The film is therefore mainly entertaining and funny, looks perfect in terms of decoration, has a nice tight pace and ultimately does exactly what it wants to do. Ledger in the title role takes on his character more than he actually plays him, but is aided by a host of well-known supporting actors of which Platt is unapologetically the nicest, Dormer the most beautiful, and Irons is guilty of very predictable typecasting. Great film in the end, if you still want to deliver a superficial product then do it like this, even those perfectly English-looking and speaking characters are never irritating here.

That Ledger anyway.

He was a good actor, but he's not perfect here yet. later as The Joker, he was a lot better than this. He still retains the charm here, he also has a bit of the right face for his role here.

The story I found quite bland and not particularly interesting to keep me entertained for 108 minutes. The action wasn't exactly top notch either, and then you get bored pretty quickly here. I know it's more romantic, but still.

What earns extra points is the atmosphere and Ledger itself. You can pretty much overlook the rest. Pretty bland characters and action scenes and a playing time that is just way too long. Well, it's no different.

Mediocre story though. I expected more from this film by Lasse Hallström. The story of Casanova was not exactly familiar to me, I know what a Casanova is, but that's where it ends. It also seems that now that I've read up on the man a bit, there's a lot of freedom of dealing with who Giacomo Casanova really was. He was a violinist and practiced occultism, he was involved in Freemasonry and the Rosicrucians. His rival was a certain Cagliostro. It doesn't appear in the movie so it's weak in that regard. However, the actors are very well known. The beautiful Sienna Miller can certainly carry a movie, as can Heath Ledger, but the script is unfortunately too weak. Jeremy Irons shines as Bishop Pucci. For a Casanova film you also expect a romantic film somewhere and some nudity. However, neither was the case here.
