The Rain People plot

"Rain people are very fragile…one mistake in love and they dissolve."

Natalie leaves her house early one morning and with it her new husband. Leaving him some breakfast, she drives to her parents, but she doesn't manage to stay there long either - partly because of her not understanding father. She gets back in her car and leaves. From a major road intersection near her home town, she calls her husband, but again she doesn't want to come home. Driving further through rural America, she soon picks up the hitchhiker 'Killer', and he manages to intrigue her...

An interesting, but somewhat dated, early film by Francis Ford Coppola, starring James Caan and Robert Duvall, both of whom would go on to play key roles in Coppola's next film, The Godfather. Caan plays a former American football player nicknamed "Killer," whose brain injury makes it difficult for him to manage independently. The protagonist, however, is Natalie [Shirley Knight], a young married woman who escapes from her life when she discovers she is pregnant. Unsure of her future and afraid of the obstacles a child will impose, she embarks on a journey without a destination. Along the way, she picks up Jimmy Kilgannon [Caan], and along the way they have several encounters, including one with police officer Gordon [Duvall], himself divorced with one child, who takes an interest in Natalie, and an opportunistic chicken farmer [Andrew Duncan].

Coppola's screenplay touches on themes that hadn't been explored much at the time, including brain damage and abortion, but in 2019, the film is probably more controversial for its treatment of the chickens. Coppola sometimes tries too hard to impose his own mark on the film with unusual camera angles, and the film is a bit slow, but the acting is good, especially by Knight.
