Nice.

Remains a very stylish, calm film whose mystery floats on great fluffy black and white visuals and exceptional sound design. It's a shame that this film is still not available in a simple/understandable way.

Ishii is a hero, no matter what first name he uses. Also much more than the punk director for which he is all too often worn out. Yet that remains the basis and this film also bears enough of a punk signature for those who know Ishii's background.

The story is simple and certainly not the main part, the atmosphere comes from the audiovisual. Also nice to see an old Asano at work, although what applies to many other Japanese films applies here: anyone who cannot cope with the stoic way of acting will bump into an emotionless wall.

4.5* and a extensive review

Dream movie!

It's a shame that there hasn't been a post here for over 2 years. Fortunately, it is on display in the Tip 250. Visually, a stunning atmosphere is created with lush black and white use, heavy downpours, the tunnel, the recurring railway crossing, the bushes, the rough sea and all the bus rides of course. Not much happens, but the smallest actions are magnified in a positive way, so that you are completely absorbed in this mystery. There is clearly a buzz in the small village. Brilliant story with beautiful, mesmerizing camera work and plenty of highlights. 4.5*

Special film, undeniably cinematographically more than fine!

In addition to previously mentioned elements such as surreal, menacing and mystery, I think the film has a number of properties that lift it far above average.

I have checked several times whether 1997 is really the year of production, the '50s-'60s look and feel is very well approximated. The same goes for the audio. Where normally dubbing has a cringe-inducing effect, it actually works in this film. By isolating and eliminating ambient noise, only what is important receives extra attention. Good job!
