Jôen plot

The film fragments follows Oriko, who is lovelessly married to a prosperous, unfaithful man. After her mother dies in a mysterious accident, she returns after a long time to a poetry meeting at the house of the sculptor who had a relationship with her mother five years earlier, something she strongly objected to at the time. At another time, Oriko, always dressed in traditional kimonos, witnesses the rape of her frivolous sister-in-law.

Beautiful film by Yoshida, which, as Mochizuki Rokuro previously indicated here, is particularly striking for its unusual mix between restrained formal (I could say distant) drama and melodrama, with neither ultimately gaining the upper hand. I enjoyed it, although I must admit that I could not really speak of any emotional involvement with the characters, which is also the reason why this has not become a real favorite for me.

It is all very beautifully filmed. A bit less distinctly different from other Japanese new wave films I saw (not many, by the way), as if someone had logically extended Mizoguchi's work into the 1960s (and removed some of the melodrama). Each scene gets a specific atmosphere from Yoshida, but everything feels like a whole, from the dreamy moments in nature, the noir-like scenes with the "sexual man" to the static of her home situation. Nicely done, but perhaps a little too formalistic for my taste at times; perhaps a bit too contrived. But it is a beautiful spectacle and Mariko Okada is great in the leading role.

3.5*

I can't get excited about the films of the Yoshida – Okada couple. Visually quite beautiful, but the enigmatic, if not inimitable, behavior of the protagonist detracts from the film in my opinion, as is also the case in the other films I have seen by this duo so far. I don't rule out the possibility that I don't have the right antenna to pick up Yoshida's message. Too bad.

Difficult. We follow Oriko who is in the tight straitjacket of a bloodless marriage. She can flutter if she wants, but the husband is a bit jealous when push comes to shove. He considers her his property and has the right to dispose of her.

Her mother is no longer there. The relationship had soured and the relationship with her sister is also not optimal. Oriko also imposed requests on them, which made it difficult for me to hear from her.

Beautifully depicted and all in all entertaining, but it didn't really move me either.
