Jake MacIllaney (Cagney) has made it to the top of the union, but isn't always legal. When he meets the young and rather stiff lawyer Dan Cabot (Smith) and his attractive wife Linda (Jones), it is a turning point in their lives. Jake breaks up with their marriage, continues to follow Linda, and blames Dan for a major theft.
