Mamma Mia! plot

"Take a trip down the aisle you'll never forget"

Donna, an independent, single mother, runs a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island. She's about to let go of Sophie, the feisty daughter she raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two old best friends: the practical and no-nonsense Rosie and the wealthy, divorced Tanya from her former backing band 'Donna and the Dynamos'. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests herself. Searching for the identity of her father to guide her down the aisle, she takes three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they had been 20 years earlier. In 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love blossoms and old romances rekindle on this lush island full of possibilities.

Oeeffff, what a presumptuous uncoordinated gang this is. That story and its effect, that is impossible! A young lady grew up alone with her mother on a Greek island. She is getting married and wants to help her father. The problem is that she doesn't know who he is. Three candidates can pass for this. Instead of getting a DNA test (which would make sense, right!) she invites all three of them to her wedding and sees what happens next. The ending is of course easy to guess, it all makes no sense and it doesn't matter :').

All this is framed with songs by ABBA, which are for the most part pulled by the hair. Their music is nice, but it really has no added value for the film. The plot and some side characters are so disturbingly moronic. It hurt me most to see The Winner Takes it All, one of ABBA's strongest songs, performed by Meryl Streep. She turns Dr into a stupid screaming show and Pierce Brosnan is constantly watching her like a lame potato sack. Bah, really another annoying musical that can take place in the already long row of fallow musicals .

Yeah, it wasn't like I was expecting a whole lot in advance, but this? Aside from a single capable singer (Seyfried), it all sounds awful. The only Abba song that I can tolerate (The Winner Takes It All) is either unbearable, or is not in the film at all (Fernando). Not that it matters anything else, because the songs hardly have anything to do with the events anyway and are therefore only extra irritating. Besides that, the characters themselves are also exceptionally uninteresting or exceptionally annoying. I usually have Streep very high, but that respect has reached its limits with this failure.

Phew, and then Brosnan. I especially laughed painfully and that made sure that the corners of the mouth still went in the right direction. His scenes with Firth and Skarsgard are by far the best in this 'movie', but whoever made him sing deserves a shot in the neck. Or an Oscar. I don't know, it was mostly hilarious. Painful and so funny. It is an actor of a certain size who still gets away with it, Donna's friends absolutely do not get away with it and provide terrible and disfigured moments.

Urgh. That music, that direction, the kitsch. The non-existent plot! Things happen, but it doesn't matter, there is never a certain seriousness that makes me want to invest in it. The decoration is absolutely terrible with the hideous colors and costumes. This is even one step worse than Grease and I thought I had already seen the most disfigured musical ever. I want my brain cells back.

And as I type this (because I thought the end was already in sight) we get another closing song from the three ladies doing Dancing Queen as the credits dance around it. Stop that. The film is ready and should not last any longer than it already has. STOP!

In any case, not a fan of ABBA and Meryl Streep and then this is a torture, you know. Very occasionally still fun due to a wrong scene here and there, but all in all difficult to get through. After the first 2 or 3 songs, the schwung is gone and then it is mandatory to play all the classics.

The male cast members do a decent job and the delicious Amanda Seyfried makes it worth it too. But woe betide if Streep opens up her grow. It is terrible.
