It was a drama to sit out. Now I'm not a fan of 50's romantic musicals, but long-winded, dull love affairs with an ugly French lady as love interest hardly keep me awake. The songs themselves are still going, provided they are not too corny or take the momentum out of the already meager story. And that was sometimes the case.

All that's left then are Gene Kelly's tap dancing skills, the beautifully made final dance with drawn decors and the occasional funny screwball-like dialogue, but to have to struggle for 2 hours for that, non merci.

I already doubted to what extent the film was shot in Paris itself, but then I read that no less than 99% of the film was filmed in a studio in California. Very nicely recreated, not of that, but the interesting thing about the film seemed to me to be authentic Parisian scenes, so that was quite a deception.

Although the other hour and a half of Vincente Minnelli's musical spectacle are very entertaining, it is the 17-minute closing ballet. If you do have a film studio at your disposal, then you should make full use of it. Ecstatic colours, dancing shadows and many, many extras. The fact that the music is by the Gershwin brothers means that it is also top notch in that area: from 'I Got Rhythm' via 'Concerto in F' to the title piece.

A playful and sweet musical that wants to transport the viewer to a place far beyond the boundaries of reality. This is pure escapism that does not take into account existing conventions or any kind of rational thinking. The story is very simplistic and never fails to surprise. At the center is a kind of love quadrangle, born of a silly mix-up and sustained by strange coincidences. As expected, the characters start to sing and dance every once in a while, but the songs and choreography are usually not very memorable either. Some dream scenes are okay, mainly the friend's concerto and the last fifteen minutes. It may be over with all that annoying tap dance. I don't understand at all how a man stamping his heels on the floor can serve as entertainment. If it were still a monkey instead of a human, I would adopt a different tone, but of course no budget is made available for that. What more is there to say? The sets were not very convincing, the acting was so-so and I'm still not a fan of musicals.
