Director Michael Winner, together with Jeffrey Konvitz, the writer of the book, adapted "The Sentinel" into a screenplay and although it borrows a bit from Rosemary's Baby, it still delivers an excellent horror thriller. The story concerns fashion model Alison Parker [Cristina Raines] who moves into a dirt-cheap apartment in Brooklyn Heights. There she meets her eccentric but friendly neighbors, except for the mysterious man who spends his days in front of the window of the apartment on the top floor. But in the evening and at night she is plagued by inexplicable noises and terrifying apparitions that make her boyfriend Michael [Chris Sarandon] decide to call for help from the police, who, however, conclude that Alison has probably imagined it and that - given that she survived a suicide attempt - she needs psychological help.

The story is largely stolen, but this is a case of 'well stolen'. The presence of a selection of film veterans is a plus, with Ava Gardner as the landlord, Martin Balsam as a professor, Eli Wallach as a seasoned detective and not to forget Burgess Meredith as the equally charismatic and sinister neighbor with a more than above-average love for his cat Jezebel. There are small roles for Christopher Walken as Wallach's younger colleague, Jeff Goldblum as a fashion photographer and Beverly D'Angelo. The result is a mix of spectacular horror elements, not least John Carradine as the blind priest who provides the most terrifying moments in this unsubtle, but very entertaining horror film.

Reasonable film about a young woman who moves into an apartment where an old priest also lives. Well constructed, but somewhat unbalanced in terms of focus on the characters and the story. There are a few effective horror scenes, which still hold up well. Furthermore, a cast with quite a few well-known names. A narrow 3.0 stars,

Seventies time capsule and what a trip. Also take a look at that cast: a mix of classic Hollywood (ageing) and new talent.

Excellent atmosphere building throughout the film with a first climax when Cristina Raines is confronted with the creatures in her rental house. Strong. The ending is also very special. The effective use of people with physical abnormalities to arouse horror in the viewer is something that might no longer be acceptable today. It is reminiscent of the approach of the early horror classic Freaks. Furthermore, I also felt the influence of Rosemary's Baby and the after-effects of The Exorcist.
