Quite a nice horror/mystery movie, not scary but exciting at times. Old building provides good atmosphere.

Sometimes I like to buy a few movies for little money and even then I come across movies that I doubt were worth the small investment. The Echo... is one such movie.

The acting of the unknown cast is still reasonable, but the story is lifeless and uninspired. Both the content of the story and the "scare moments" seem to have been copied directly from a number of well-known genre members. In addition, the makers have made very little effort to make the ghosts actually scary.

There are enough films to be found that fill those 90 minutes better. This one could almost serve better as a coaster...

The remake of the Filipino film Sigaw (2004). One of the first Filipino horror films ever and given the small number of votes and the moderate rating on MM not a direct recommendation. The remake was shot by director Yam Laranas who also directed the original. The Echo is a fine film, but of course it is yet another remake and thus shows the lack of creativity that the current horror film world suffers from. Since I have not seen the original I was fortunately able to approach the film with a fresh mind.

The Echo was produced by the producers of The Ring and The Grudge. We are talking about the American remakes here. The script was written by Eric Bernt who also did that for the remake of The Hitcher (1986). Remake experts are at work here. The Echo is a fine film, but a lot of things seemed a bit familiar to me. Now that is often the case in the horror genre, but later I read that many scary scenes were taken almost straight from Asian films Ju-on (2002) and Ringu (1998). That is going too far. It is knowledge that I did not really suffer from while watching and that does not hinder my appreciation for The Echo. The observation does of course tie in nicely with the general lack of creativity that I mentioned in general earlier.

Despite this, The Echo is still a great film. The acting is solid. The setting in an old apartment building is wonderfully atmospheric. A dilapidated and noisy building that evokes a great oppressive atmosphere. Strange noises, neighbor disputes, dim lighting, hardly a resident to be seen. That kind of thing. The entourage lends itself well to a few exciting scenes. Like I said. The Echo is a great film.
