Well, some scenes around the exorcism were still creepy, but otherwise this was nothing at all. Especially that docu-style seems a bit cheap and is also not consistently implemented. Would have made a real fictional documentary of it. It doesn't get exciting anywhere, the film doesn't look special and the acting is mediocre. 1.0*.

The film is shown as a reality documentary in which the chosen technique with handycam fortunately did not work. The story is built up slowly with an eye for frequent dialogues about exorcism. Still, the momentum picks up as the film progresses. It's not really exciting or scary. A plus is that the possessed are well in the picture and also create a nasty atmosphere. The scene when Isabella meets her mother is especially interesting. Too bad about the sudden abrupt ending which was unsatisfactory for me. The acting is mediocre. 5/10

Call the camera.

The Devil Inside is a film that is little appreciated over a fairly wide area. And I understand that all too well. As a horror film, the film is not exactly flawless, but it is very entertaining. In between all the loud and bombastic images of the film, there was rarely a moment in which I was bored.

That does not alter the fact that this film cannot escape the usual logic errors and a narrative that gradually disappears completely. I know that during the second half of the movie I wondered a few times what exactly I was watching. We see some demons, stunts and screams, but merging rarely actually works properly.

All that ambiguity is nicely compensated with actors who try, haunted enough to keep it interesting as a whole and a pace that cuts through the film. Some scenes also make the viewer genuinely comfortable, and Bell knows how to use some techniques successfully in between. What is especially clever is that the horror scenes actually scare. Just a bit meaner in tone. Yummy.

It's a pity that it's all just a mess and that the film can't keep up with itself in the second half, but if you can look around that a bit, you're actually waiting for a nice and nice fast film. Bell has become something of a Uwe Boll among horror fans, I think, but I can always appreciate his films to a certain extent.
