Romero and his criticism. This time not with zombies, but with crazies, although you may wonder who exactly he meant by that. You don't have to set this up for gore and the like, the many action scenes could have been a bit smoother and there is more wrong with this outbreak, but with the switching between government and a number of people fleeing, the rough editing, striking camera work and some adrenaline create an atmosphere of utter chaos and despair. I actually thought the first half was quite strong in that regard. The film gradually becomes more difficult, but it still has a few nice touches of strange behavior. Those sheep, yes. The best one, however, is one that comes along quite early. The knitting grandmother.

At no point did this film manage to "suck me into the story". Messy acting with a lot of shouting. After 50 minutes I had really had it. Shame about the purchase.

Case remake is better. This original by George A. Romero starts off quite nicely. You are actually thrown straight into the deep end and that, in combination with the exceptionally smooth editing for a 70's film, is quite nice.

Unfortunately, it soon becomes less so. Lots of shouting, lots of unimpressive shootouts, the soldiers in the white suits seem humorous rather than scary and mysterious, and the whole thing feels quite dated.

The 'crazies' themselves do not distinguish themselves enough from the 'normal' ones. That father who tries to kill his family and that woman with the knitting needle... I would have liked to see it like that more often, but the rest just grins a bit stupidly. I'll be watching the remake soon as well. It was actually better in every way
