Good film in which a mother with psychological problems undergoes a controversial therapy. A story that actually gets better and better towards the end and is fascinating. The beginning is sometimes a bit long-winded. The growths on the body are typical Cronenberg and provide a few creepy moments.

David Cronenberg's first truly professional-looking film, and not having to struggle to overlook the cheap locations and mediocre renditions of Shivers or Rabid allows me to Now focus entirely on the story and the theme. The fact of the "Psycho-Plasmics" on the one hand, the sometimes deliciously unsavory "body horror" on the other, the intelligent elaboration of both motifs and the excellent and surprisingly cool acting of Oliver Reed together make for an excellent film. However, the downsides should not be left unmentioned: the other actors usually do a good job but are unfortunately not very appealing, some plot lines come dangerously close to melodrama (the divorced couple, the divorced grandparents, the father who the school teacher could start building), and a few elements are too reminiscent of earlier famous films (the piercing violin scratches from Psycho, the scary creature in the red coat from Don't look now). Although I don't consider The brood a masterpiece, the film made it clear that I had seen it correctly when I borrowed it from the video store at the time because I knew immediately after The fly that I wanted to see all of Cronenberg (which I still did to this day, never regretted it).

Gene fat, poor "horror". The acting was also very slow and poor.
