This one reminded me in some ways of a Julia Ducournau, a Grave (Film, 2016) looks a bit like this. Not that there is a mysterious threat throughout the film, no, the set-up is rather light-hearted and comical, but I found that literal rawness reflected in it.

I liked the character Teddy. Nice entrance during the ceremony already and it was already a lot of laughter when he raises his middle finger wildly gesticulating, tries to leave, but then simply stops ...

The beast indeed only comes into view to a limited extent, only once actually, and then still quite vague and barely or not moving. Was what a disappointment, but the bloodbath afterwards made up for a lot. Pure action was unfortunately not there, it may have been technically a bit too complicated for this low budget.

But I certainly had fun. I found it to be quite atmospheric and fit well into the film. The metamorphosis was fascinating and funny at the same time. Anthony Bajon did very well with this one too!

Teddy is not a full-blooded horror film, but is in fact a coming of age film. The Boukherma brothers, who are responsible for directing and writing, take the time to introduce the character Teddy. Teddy is a boy who grows up in a rural French town and tries to make the best of it. In doing so, he often runs into limits, as often happens in a film about growing up. The viewer is given ample opportunity to familiarize himself with the protagonist's world. Part of that, of course, is the transformation he undergoes when he is bitten by a wolf.

The film steers clear of sensational effects and refrains from brute force. Teddy is a film that is very relaxed from the start. This is done with calm camera work, with a lot of attention for the landscape and with humor that puts things into perspective. So pleasant. The first half of the film is very subdued but also very entertaining. Anyone who hopes that things will get rougher in the second half, when the transformation gets a clearer place, will be disappointed. For example, a real transformation scene is not shown and murders are not actually shown.

The viewer who hopes that the second half will be just as thoughtful and entertaining, will also be somewhat disappointed. The hectic pace increases and ensures that many events are rushed too quickly. The light-heartedness disappears and so does the thoughtful manner of narration. Still quite enjoyable to watch, but now without the casual esprit from the beginning.

And so Teddy is a nice coming of age in which the theme of the werewolf is exploited more psychologically than plastically. Teddy is not a real horror. At most a tragicomedy with horror traits. Pretty okay.
