Although it doesn't really offer much new, the film feels very fresh.

The start is pretty strong and leaves you wondering what's going on. What follows is a somewhat varied first half. It's nice to have all that information about that mirror, but it's just a bit too much. After an argument between brother and sister and the accompanying unveiling of the mirror, a very strong scene by the way, the film starts to run very smoothly. Present and past connect seamlessly, and as a viewer you also start to wonder what is real and what is not real. We do get some very strong scenes there and it's quite exciting every now and then. It doesn't get really scary anywhere. Oculus is more based on tension and atmosphere. and that's very good. The ending was somewhat predictable, but very good. You know what to expect more or less, but were also quite surprised.

The kids are doing quite well. They are even the best in the movie. The adults are nowhere really steady in their acting.

Visually it is all quite ok. Occasionally a nice shot, but otherwise not very special. Music is very nice. Adds a lot to the movie. Sound design could have done with a little more.

Oculus is a very nice slow burner thriller.

“It was the mirror!”

Fantastic horror movie. Mike Flanagan has some strong horror films on his resume, and Oculus is another gem. The film actually follows two storylines (the parents and the kids), and it's amazing how smoothly it all flows together, and how natural it all feels. The children want to show that their parents have been driven crazy by a mirror, and you see in flashbacks what really happened to the parents.

It's interesting and exciting, and the acting makes it all the better. Thwaites as a little brother is a bit boring, but Karen Gillan, Sackhoff, Cochrane and the young child actors are doing great. How it all comes together towards the end is well done, and especially a scene around Gillan is horrific. Oculus doesn't do a lot of new stuff, but it does approach horror perfection.

Great film, where at a certain point you no longer know whether the scene that is playing is caused by the mirror or not.

Some don't call it horror, but I would recommend consulting the dictionary. There are certainly good moments that scare you or make you horrified (for example apple lamp).

Others call it annoying that there is always a switch between the present and the past, but I think that is precisely the strength of the film, because in the present there is always a switch between illusion and reality.

I would like to see more of these types of more complex films than the standard zombie films or teenage group in an abandoned mountain hut.
