Very fun and fresh horror film indeed. Director Tesh Guttikonda was previously involved in the equally surprising Influencer, but this is even better. Unexpected twists, reasonable performances, enough gore, tension, ... It's all there. Highly recommended because it has been very sparse in horror land lately.

A city family is traveling through a remote area in an RV when they come across brothers Vern [Richard Harmon] and Billy [Ben Sullivan], who are looking for their brother [Todd Masters] and have broken down on the side of the road. After some deliberation, father Keith [Matthew MacCaull] decides to give Billy a ride and accept an invitation to spend the night at the family farm. Are they walking straight into the funnel of The Hills Have Eyes or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Well, not in the way you expect. Black comedy sometimes plays too cleverly with the conventions of the horror genre and does not really work as a social satire, but it is certainly original and MacCaull and Llewellyn (as the 'farmer's daughter') deliver excellent acting.

Lowlifes

Nice snack.

Lowlifes is about a family of four from Los Angeles who are driving through America in their camper. One day they encounter two hillbillies. After a strange conversation, in which the boys say they are looking for Melior, the family encounters these two again later. This time the two are broken down on the side of the road. They ask the family for help, but the mother wants nothing to do with them. Eventually the father decides to take one of the two to the hillbillies' house. Once there, they get to know the rest of the family. But who can be trusted? And who will get out of here alive?

I thought it was a pretty good horror movie. At first I really didn't realize that the family were the murderers, so the knife in Vern's neck by the son was a complete surprise to me. Vern found out that Melior had been in the camper. As soon as the family gets to know the rest of the family, you as a viewer also realize that these are not hillbillies at all, but very friendly people. The two boys just came across a bit strange.

The family of four travels through America in their camper in search of lowlifes, who they can then slaughter and eat. So they are also cannibals. The psycho of the family was clearly the father. The son wanted to follow in his footsteps. Mother and daughter were actually not at all happy with this life. The daughter also had all kinds of secrets, which of course later caused friction between the family members.
Anyway, in terms of acting they did a great job. The kills and gore also looked good and the film had enough tension.

3 stars.
