MOH episode 7.

Because I have a feeling that I might actually appreciate Miike's films, I was happy that he also made an episode of MOH. Since I have only seen Odishon (3*) by him, because his films are quite hard to find, I was curious about Imprint.

I was hoping for some kind of bizarre love it or hate it bunch. And that is accurate. Or rather, it is indeed a bunch. The actors are laughable, with the sad low point being Drago. This man acts truly ridiculously badly. They shouldn't give him any lines at all, or better yet, not the whole role.
The story is slow, boring, and not fun at all. It is also strange that the Japanese suddenly all speak English. This sounded quite odd to the ear.

If I have to mention two positive points, I found the torture quite entertaining. the hand stuck to the head was also pretty funny. Unfortunately, that is all there is to say.

I had secretly hoped that this would be an episode I would rate the highest, but unfortunately, it is currently at the very bottom. What a shame.

Definitely one of the best in the Moh series. Miike is capable of much better, but his style is clearly evident here. Visually strong, and the rambling storyline has plenty of good scenes. It is also understandable that this went too far for the Americans on TV. A bit lame, of course, but this really went further than what I have seen in the series so far. It is still a Miike, after all. I am a true fan by now, even though I have only seen a quarter of his oeuvre.

Director Takashi Miike's Asian influence provides a refreshing look within the Masters of Horror series; unfortunately, the Western influences within it are not all that great. As a viewer, I fail to see what an addition someone like Billy Drago is, for instance; surely, as a director, you must see for yourself that this acting performance comes across as completely uninspired? The Japanese cast doesn't get very far either, as they have to speak English and are overshadowed by their accents. Fortunately, Miike delivers a strong performance with a number of unsettling moments that drag on uncomfortably long. Such a scene with the needles is of course very memorable, but not enough to compensate for the shortcomings.
