Dust Devil plot
"He's not a serial killer. He's much worse."
A "shape shifter" - a ghost the locals call the Dust Devil - emerges from the desert in search of new victims. He lives on people who have lost everything but life itself. Wendy broke up with her husband and drives around aimlessly in her car. She picks up a stranger. But when strange things happen, she starts to have doubts about her action. Meanwhile, a police officer is on the trail of the killer. He is aided by a spiritual leader who has shed his faith in the extraterrestrial.

A film about a serial killer demon in the desert who lets his victims take him as a hitchhiker. Seems like a nice basic idea, but the implementation leaves much to be desired. Beautiful photography here and there, but in terms of story and tension it really doesn't amount to much. This work also disappoints in terms of horror. 3/10

Mediocre film about a woman who leaves her husband after yet another argument and picks up a hitchhiker along the way. The plot, the myth and the characters are not really interesting. Not much else happens, which makes this a somewhat boring film. All depicted with enough atmosphere and also some beautiful shots of the desert of South Africa and Namibia.

Dust Devil is a ferocious genre mix with elements from western, horror, road movies and of course arthouse. Once you get used to this abundance of elements you will discover an unusual and fascinating film.
Despite the expectations raised by the storyline, the film does not rely heavily on gore and splatter effects to create a dark atmosphere. The film uses more artistic means for this. Dreamlike images and wonderful and eccentric characters give the film an oppressive atmosphere. This film appeals to the viewer's imagination.
It is probably also the reason why the numerous bloody murders mainly take place off-screen. That does not mean that the film is not a brutal film. In fact, it seems that the scene where the Dust Devil is shot in the head was long known as the most brutal scene ever.
The photography is extraordinary. The acting is good. The soundtrack is fine. Unfortunately, the story too often ends up in irrelevant and tough passages that take the film out of its rhythm. I sometimes had trouble keeping my mind on it and even had to restart a scene twice because my thoughts kept wandering to more pleasant things. Dust Devil is a film that meanders from exciting and intriguing to tough and uninteresting. A film of back and forth. Not really my thing.
