Dood Eind plot

"This house is angry"

During a cozy evening around the campfire, seven childhood friends are suddenly attacked by a bunch of bloodthirsty dogs. They manage to hide in an old, abandoned country house, but it turns out not to be as deserted as expected. They hear noises, doors close by themselves and they see the frightening appearance of a woman. But it is only the beginning of the diabolical task of getting out of the house safely. The panic, the increasing cold, fatigue and mutual conflicts make their search for a way out hell. Still, the survivors will have to unravel the house's haunted past before light shines through the dark hallways again...

Sympathetic attempt to bring the horror genre to Dutch cinema, but it remains too clumsy to get under the skin. For some reason, the director thought the tame dogs and a CGI screensaver are the kinds of threats that would benefit a slasher. Another problem is that the overacting soap folk are continuously portrayed sobbing, sniffling and moaning. That takes the pressure off quite a bit. It's a pity they didn't get more out of it, because in terms of atmosphere, lighting and choice of location, it would have been quite a nice production.

Check box horror.

The makers ticked off a lot while making this film. Dood Eind seems like such a product by committee film. First a brainstorm with everyone involved, to determine which things should be in a good horror film. And then try to make some running whole with that list, which of course never works.

What this film lacks mainly in love for the genre. The setup isn't even that bad. The setting, the legend, even the CG don't stand in the way of a good horror ... but the film just lacks atmosphere so much. Going through the motions is what it's called. Everything is there and it all resembles what should be in a good horror, but it never forms an atmospheric whole, nor does it appeal.

Acting is also a dislike point. The headline that Hooi pulls throughout the film is hilarious, the sighing and whining of the rest almost makes it a comedy. The script itself is also a bit too muddled, with a bit too much horror stuff mixed together and the introduction of the characters makes no sense (a lot of remarkably specific background info that turns out to be completely unnecessary). It's those kind of weird twists that make you wonder whether the makers have understood the function of these kinds of scenes in other horrors.

But visually I thought it was still possible. Nothing impressive or anything, but good use is made of the setting and the CG was not in the least disturbing and even somewhat mysterious. But not enough to really rely on as a film, the rest was just too bad for that.

2.0*
