De Griezelbus plot
De Griezelbus, after the books of the same name by Paul van Loon, tells the story about eleven-year-old Onnoval, he is an absolute outsider at school. He is bullied for his appearance and for his behaviour: Onnoval writes horror stories and romantic poems. A made-up horror school trip becomes reality when Ferluci takes it off. Can Onnoval close the door to the other 'reality' and save his classmates?

As a kid I was a fan of the book series and so I was curious about the movie. Just watched it on Netflix and oh well... it's pretty fun. The film gets off to a great start but unfortunately gets bogged down in an over-the-top theater when they arrive at the park.
Also, the story takes itself quite seriously. I think that's a plus, it saves a lot of silly humor and keeps the atmosphere alive. (The moment that boy farted and I laughed, I realized this was the first time). That sudden humor was quite unexpected and felt out of place in this quite serious horror film. Then more jokes, or none at all. As a child I might have liked this neo-Gothic story, and maybe even scary. But at the age of 35 I often wonder what I'm watching now.
The original books had plenty of stories that were actually scary (Creepy Bus 3 in particular had some good horror stories) but none of that is reflected here. It remains a somewhat exaggerated, Land of Ever-esque horror fairy tale. Fun for the target audience.

With his rich imagination and shy personality, Onnoval [Serge Price] is an easy target for teaser Gino [Jim van der Penne], especially after Onnoval reveals that he is actually a werewolf. His timid attitude also doesn't help him impress Liselore [Lisa Smit], who even calls him a coward. When a mysterious apparition in a dream calls Onnoval to write a story in which he takes revenge on Gino and Liselore, Onnoval finds an ideal outlet. Until he realizes that his life is starting to turn out exactly as in his story! The acting of the two young protagonists is not top-notch, but it is a fun story that provides entertainment for young and old, especially thanks to excellent special effects and the downright hilarious interplay of Willem Nijholt and Angela Schijf, who throw all the brakes on with visible pleasure. as the creepy Count Vlapono and Sister Ursula. Rob de Nijs was absolutely right!

Tried this youth film once and it was fun to watch. The film managed to make something fun out of it with limited resources. It won't be super exciting, of course, but it's fun for the target group.
