A film that drowns in its obsession to make everything as 'Halloween-themed' as possible. It almost completely relies on that nostalgic atmosphere without doing much in return. First of all, rather strange casting. Not only because they act terribly mediocre, but also because it makes no sense at all within this story to choose such old guys. Their behavior is that of a young teenager; it does not rhyme at all with what you see. Without exception, also very unsympathetic. Moreover, Hasty has a particularly hard time when it comes to pacing. Endless chatter is only dutifully interrupted for an uninspired kill or a line from Tony Todd, which is scandalously badly used. Not the Halloween film I had hoped for, while on paper it had everything it took to easily succeed.

Messy Halloween hodgepodge with all sorts of influences, from undead zombies to circus freaks. It doesn't come together very strongly, but since the story isn't given priority in the first place, that's somewhat forgivable. The acting isn't, however, with weak and unconvincing characters who have to drag the film along. Pancho Moler and Tony Todd are given thankless roles for which they get far too little space, but Josh Hasty's direction is also not particularly subtle or atmospheric. A number of sets look nice and the layout is passable, but otherwise there's significantly little to enjoy in Candy Corn. If the tension doesn't really come across, you're stuck with a film that can't even come close to the horror average.
