Entertaining and fairly simplistic thriller film that feels somewhat as if the studios have been cutting corners to some extent. Director Chris Weitz mainly gives the impression that he has been a translator of an existing script, to which little has been added to distinguish himself from similar Blumhouse projects. The acting is fortunately decent and a few jump scares are built up well, but it is all over in no time and the finale is almost ridiculous. AfrAId seems to have been hastily put together to make a lot of money in the short term, but that will ensure that this project will quickly be forgotten. Since it is all quite easy to watch, I award it some extra points, but it fits well in the list of recent bite-swallow-away projects from this studio.

We follow Curtis and his family as they test an advanced AI assistant called AIA in their home. What starts out as a helpful helper takes a dark turn as AIA takes more and more control over their lives, letting nothing and no one stand in their way.

To be honest, I didn't have very high expectations for this movie, especially because of the low scores here on Moviemeter. Still, it turned out okay and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I appreciate most Blumhouse movies and Afraid fits in well with that. The movie has a good build-up, where the tension gradually increases as you see more of what the AI can do.

Still, the film often colors within the lines, which is often the case with a Blumhouse film, so don't expect shocking gore or explicit scenes. The cinematography and acting were just fine. Always nice to see John Cho acting again, although it's still weird to see him without a joint, haha.

The ending was unfortunately a bit disappointing and confusing. There are too many loose ends, which makes the story feel unsatisfactory. Perhaps there will be a second film, in which we will get some more answers.

3 stars.

Generic thriller from the Blumhouse stable, solidly put together but never really exciting. The script is full of interesting ideas about the increasing role that technology plays in our lives, but somewhere in the execution it went wrong. As the film progresses everything becomes less and less credible and they rush towards a lackluster climax.
