The Offering initially distinguishes itself because the story takes place in an unusual setting (the Jewish community). However, as the story unfolds, and the supernatural threat becomes more and more prominent, there is no more left than a standard horror story, as you have seen it countless times before. There is nothing wrong with a predictable horror from time to time, provided the execution is well put together and that is unfortunately not the case here.

The construction is still a must. There were a few moments where I felt uncomfortable and there is clearly a subcutaneous tension present. Unfortunately, the director goes further and further as the running time goes on, until the finale has turned into a cheap B-movie, from which any form of tension has completely disappeared. The dark ending offers a slight compensation for this, but the film had already slipped so far for me that it didn't do much.

In summary: I like to see more of these kinds of settings than the standard American families in most horror films. As a director, just make sure that your film remains of the same level, and remains as exciting and scary as possible throughout the entire running time. Very handy in this genre.

The Offering

It's already been mentioned here. A repetition of moves, this time hoisted in a Jewish jacket. I expected more.

The film had an uneasy vibe to me all the time. The atmosphere and music was creepy. Sometimes it got a little scary, but often it just wasn't original enough or you saw it coming. The effects were okay, but nothing special and the 'monster' looked okay.

"The Offering," also known as "Abyzou," offers a refreshing take on the horror genre. The film delivers suspense thanks to well-timed scares and impressive special effects for the monster. I didn't see the surprise ending coming and it sticks with you. Striking and fun that the film explores Judaism instead of the usual Christian themes in the genre. In short, "The Offering" is a fun and distinctive horror experience.
