Barriers Burned Away plot

In 1871, an undercover detective in Chicago gets a job as a doorman in a somewhat shady saloon to gather information about a stolen painting, which he believes the thieves will be selling there. He quickly falls in love with the saloon owner's daughter, who sees him only as a doorman. His undercover work soon puts him and the girl in danger, both from the criminals who stole the painting and from the infamous Chicago fire of 1871.
