Completely agree with the above. I went for, let me be honest, the very nice dvd cover, which indeed promised a film noir thriller. Unfortunately, you can indeed see this as one big propaganda film for the FBI. Everything goes efficiently, properly and quickly, as long as the FBI is in control, something the narrator certainly does not forget to mention. After a while you have had enough of this kind of sewer advertising hidden as a thriller and you want to concentrate on the story.

Although there is little to be seen there. That this won the Oscar for best script, and thus surpassed Objective Burma!, seems to me to be another huge disgrace in the history of the Academy. Very wooden dialogues and the constant narrator do not make it any better. The actors are also very substandard (were they real FBI agents or actors?) and the Germans were portrayed so stereotypically that I still expected Herr Otto Flick and Helga.

What a wonderful top film! I enjoyed this exciting thriller from the first to the last second, which won an Oscar for best screenplay. This film was made in 1945 and as a viewer you feel it, you get a kind of authentic war atmosphere, typical of the films that were made at the time and which simply cannot be reproduced anymore. This film is considered film noir, more specifically docu-noir, because of the documentary precision with which everything is revealed. It is no coincidence that the film is a production by Louis De Rochemont, producer of newsreels before and during the war. The voice-over, typical of film noir, is a reminder of the commentary voice in the newsreels that were broadcast in the cinemas of that time. The film was also shot on location in Washington and New York, which contributes completely to the grim realistic atmosphere of the film. The actors all deliver good convincing performances, for a story that takes place in FBI circles. Other viewers on this forum reject this film because it is supposedly a propaganda film by the FBI, but if you follow that opinion, you should boycott almost all Hollywood films because they have a patriotic basis for 99.9%. What I find worse, on the other hand, is the fact that there is no room in the film for a critical note on the plans for the atomic bomb, around which the plot revolves.

Nevertheless, I find this film an absolute top in terms of story, cinematography and acting performances. A must see for fans of spy films and film noir. For me it is on the same level as Call Northside 777, that other docu-noir by Henry Hathaway.

A very influential film because of its documentary-like style and location work, and as such a milestone on the road from studio to street in American cinema. In my opinion, however, the film shoots itself in the foot with that hammering voice-over commentary, because as soon as you are in the "dramatic" plot line, you are taken out of it again by the omniscient narrator, which takes away some of the tension from the film. Moreover, the documentary-like character of the film is of course helped by the decision not to cast any stars, but the performances of the American characters could have been a little less flat, and amateur Dietrich also remains a little too unaffected by the pressure of having to maintain his false identity and his dangerous plans against the German spies. Historical interest at its maximum, cinematographic impact somewhat less.
