The humor is nice, the main characters a lot less and what bothers most is the aimless atmosphere. The layout is beautiful, but the story lacks much-needed dynamics and pace and falls into annoying loitering. Unfortunately, it started out so gripping and energetic.

Style over substance, I'm not usually one for that. It is indeed a beautifully designed, colorful fantasy about two half-baked girls, but due to the lack of an interesting story, my interest in this kind of film is sadly lacking. Director Tetsuya Nakashima's Memories of Matsuko (2006) and Kokuhaku (2010) are much better to me.

A special Japanese film that looks very mischievous, fresh and cheerful with all kinds of gimmicks and animation effects. In that point of view funny for some, but perhaps also a bit childish or lame. I leave it somewhat in the middle, because the enthusiasm of the film is a hit, just like the character Momoko.

In terms of content, I found it rather opaque from Lolita Mokoko and a friend who is completely opposite to Momoko. When Momoko appears, you imagine yourself in a fairytale dream world with bright colors and where everything seems to be rosy. Her friendship with Ichigo is central and the latter learns to know real friendship and values.

Kamikaze Girls has become a visual film above all. There is little depth to the characters themselves, but the film does try to bring forward a message, however sweet it may be. A film that would have been better received in Japan with all those subcultures that are harder for us to estimate.
