When the movie came out, I thought it was a very original movie. Now it's a little less. The fairytale effect is nice to look at but I've seen it more beautiful like in "Midsummernights Dream". The acting is average. All in all, the film looks nice, but it's not that special.

Simple.

Not too grand a fairy tale, where the emphasis is mainly on a somewhat corny romance. Barrymore is okay, the rest not very noticeable. Huston even found it quite irritating, although of course she doesn't have her part with it either.

There are a few nice additions, such as Da Vinci who provides some chuckle moments left and right. It brightens up the film a bit, because otherwise it really is the old song. Also visually not much to experience (which is a shame for a film like this) and the soundtrack is of the same cloth.

The film mainly struggles with a poor mix of fantasy and realism, the two cancel each other out a bit here, so that the fairy tale never really comes to life and the remaining clichés seem a bit out of place in the drier approach.

1.5*

Original and rather mischievous version of the Cinderella fairy tale, moved to the French Court, the castle of Amboise where Leonardo Da Vinci also stayed.

Can't get rid of the idea that the actual fairy tale is approached somewhat mockingly, with the necessary clichés in acts and wording. Not that this is so bad because in the end they lived happily ever after, as the fairy tale prescribes.

What a surprisingly good movie! Actually a great and even impressive film!

I was impressed by the story, the beautiful images, the nice finds added in any way. It deepened and enlightened the film.

But most of all I was impressed (still actually) by the crushing acting of Drew Barrymore... what a beautiful girl and what an incredibly convincing performance.

If this feeling lasts longer, this could turn into a big 4 * later on... but now certainly a well-deserved 3.5 *

Not quite.

Another variant of the well-known animation fairy tale, which has already roamed the world as a legend and story for Disney, of course. Some variants can be called dark and daring, but most versions seem to aim in the direction that this EverAfter also pursues; sentimental, safe and predictable.

This means you prefer a safe stylization, but also a stable base. Director Tennant stands out in taking unnecessary risks as little as possible, so that this production can always find a pillar to lean on when mistakes are made. Thus, the story as well as the course is safe and the chemistry between Barrymore and Scott never really explodes. On the other hand, there is a world concept that works very well.

Lovely attention to detail as well as presentation. I'm not a fan of this era, but I have to say that Tennant's vision is quite successful. Fresh, nuanced use of color and a good atmosphere. I have little to complain about in terms of visual power, other than the opinion that the camera use is perhaps just a bit too energyless. I also prefer to see the sides of the room in that area rather than just the center point.

Safe production, in other words, that never enters real territory that is distinctive or innovative. Due to a lack of really strong chemistry, I'm not going to give it enough credit, but I have to say that compared to similar films from this era, this one was much easier to swallow. In any case, the playing time is never really felt, but in turn it never fails to surprise.
