Beastly plot

"Love is never ugly."

The film - inspired by the classic story of ''Beauty and the Beast'' - is set in a modern setting. After arrogant teenager Kyle Kingson humiliates his Goth classmate, she puts a curse on him that turns him from "hot girl" to a hideous monster. To break the spell, Kyle must find someone who loves him as he is now.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite children's movie and I've had a soft spot for the story for as long as I can remember. That's why I wanted to see Beastly too. I'm too cynical for most girl movies, but for the sake of the story, I really wanted to try this one.

Beastly is pretty much what I expected. You can see the plot twists coming if you know the story of the Disney movie as well as I do. I actually don't even mind that, I was just very curious how they would translate the different story elements to this century. In the majority of cases I think that transition is quite successful, sometimes it is a bit too implausible or too thick. Kyle is clearly a selfish ass in the beginning, it is hard to comprehend that he is still so popular. They could have made him a bit more subtly a selfish asshole. Anyway.

The acting was fair to good. I especially liked Mary-Kate Olsen; she obviously had fun playing the witch. I also like how we get to see a tiny bit of her in the last scene of the movie. The housekeeper and teacher made a nice substitute for Lumière and Pendule from Beauty and the Beast (at least that's how I saw them).

Alex Pettyfer looks successfully terrifying. His blooming tattoo is strangely beautiful, but the holes and stripes on his face are far from appealing. I actually thought he looked so much like his original self that Lindy should have recognized him when he looked normal again. Especially since his posture and his voice had remained the same.

Well, Beastly might not be a cinematic masterpiece, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed watching it. For the target audience, it is sure to be fun.
