I can't make comparisons with Babe because I haven't seen it. And I don't think it could have been a spin-off of this movie since it's based on a written story that was already aired in 1973 as an animation. So basically Babe is more inspired by Charlotte's Web and not the other way around.

I personally had hoped for a big role for the girl Fern, but in the end it's the piggy Wilbur himself who takes the lead. It's all entertaining, funny, sweet, but as Dick said it could all be made shorter. In the end we don't get to see or hear much of Charlotte even though she is in the title. Ultimately, the most entertaining character is Templeton the rat who at times comes across as a grumpy version of Remy from Ratatouille.

The comparisons with Babe cannot be avoided, of course. Quite a pleasant family film about a stubborn and also ignorant piglet who looks at the (less innocent) world through rose-colored glasses. It's not just Wilbur that steals the show.

Charlotte the spider also gets a prominent role and she is the signboard to promote the spider in a true commercial. Spiders are not scary or dirty, they are just very useful and reliable. The prejudices are frequently processed in the film and the life of a rat is also discussed.

Pretty nice without earth-shattering stuff. Nice to catch up with the kids. The first image with Charlotte may have been spooky, but her sweet voice quickly eased the fear.
