Precious Images plot

This short film by Chuck Workman contains some 470 (very) short film clips, drawing from over 80 years of American film. The film was made in 1986 and presented to the public to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Director's Guild of America (founded in 1936). The (often iconic) clips shown are chronologically sequenced from The Great Train Robbery (1903) to Rocky IV (1985). The entire film is cleverly edited, with sequences within the film playing with genre, theme, and content.
