Zillion plot
"The rise and fall of the country's biggest disco ever."
It's 1997. Frank Verstraeten, a computer genius with a nose for business, a fascination for nightlife and an unhealthy urge to prove himself, only wants one thing: his own disco that not only outperforms the competition but simply humiliates it. The futuristic mega discotheque Zillion is a fact and Frank turns from computer dealer to the pivotal figure of the Antwerp nightlife. He parades with the most beautiful women in Belgium and forges an alliance with Dennis Black Magic, the porn king who provides the spicy extras. Unfortunately, beautiful songs don't last long either.

Since I went to Zillion Beach in my younger years, I really wanted to see this film out of nostalgia. Couldn't wait for a movie night. Film is a succession of good beats, atmospheric images and drama behind the scenes. The fact that it all really happened gives everything an extra punch. And punch enough in this movie. You are as it were sucked into the nightlife. And because I saw it on a big screen with excellent cinema audio, it was an experience in itself. Kudos to Mateo Simoni, resemblance really scary with the real Dennis Black Magic. The rest of the cast also puts in a great performance, Jonas as Frank, Barbara as his mother and Charlotte as Frank's sweetheart whose real name is not allowed, but everyone knows who it is about (lol)… , is a film of almost 2.5 hours, but it doesn't bore for a minute and was done in no time. I really enjoyed it and thought back with some melancholy to the time when I still went out in such dancings. Still one of the better Flemish films. Give 4.5*, because 5* is really for the very special toppers.

Zillion is audiovisually very well put together, fantastic camera work by Robrecht Heyvaert, and the excellent cast makes this a very entertaining ride. Under the hood, however, this is an Wolf of Wall Street clone that falls short from a dramaturgical point of view. Both tone and story beats sometimes just don't add up, which means that the whole thing doesn't go well.

I have been coming to Kinepolis Antwerp for 25 years and I have never experienced that I had to search for a parking space for 20 minutes there, unbelievable how many people came to this film. I was able to book 2 seats at the last minute because all the halls, and he played in about 8, were completely sold out.
I went to Zillion a few times when I was 21, but especially the music is recognizable from my former nightlife. I do associate Zillion mainly with difficult to get in, there was always something wrong that prevented you from entering, your pants, your shoes. So certainly not just Moroccans. The doormen were incredibly selective and very annoying.
The film itself I especially liked the first half, the happening in and around Zillion, the music etc. but after that when the fall starts I find it all a bit incoherent and exaggerated and it suddenly becomes a kind of 'great hard' action film. That is a shame after such a strong first half. It should have been 20 minutes shorter in my opinion.
But very entertaining nonetheless!
