Young John 'Johnnie' Stone receives crime lessons from charismatic mobster Frank Wilson. Together they successfully rob a gas station. When Wilson kills the owner in a store robbery with a gun stolen from Fred Burke, the fiancée of Johnnie's sister Madge, Fred is sent to jail. The innocent Fred is then sentenced to death. Wilson pressures and threatens Johnnie, who conflicts with his conscience: Johnnie must remain silent, even after both are also sentenced to death after a botched robbery. In the 'Sing Sing' prison, Johnnie is advised to talk anyway and Wilson learns about it.
