After a long, harsh winter, spring finally arrives in a small town in southern China. It is 1946 and the war has caused serious damage to people's hearts and to the landscape. In the Dai family's house, life begins to resume its usual quiet routine. But with the arrival of spring, tensions arise that will severely test the love, lust and surrender of the housemates. Dai Liyan, the head of the family, is young and very ill. Yu Wan, his wife, is a conscientious, beautiful woman, full of zest for life, but… frustrated. Xiu, Liyan's younger sister, and Old Huang, the servant, live in the same house. One day a guest knocks on the door. It is Zhang Zhichen, an old schoolmate of Liyan, who now works as a doctor in Shanghai. With his arrival, the existing relationships in the house are thoroughly shaken up.
