The film and the novel of the same name by Jean Rhys tell the story of Bronte's Jane Eyre, in which the very British Edward Rochester has to confess to his new wife Jane Eyre that he is already married. With Bronte it is hardly clear who the first wife was. It was a Creole woman who, because of Rochester's then, becomes alienated from all that is her own and thus starts to doubt her 'identity'.
