Nice film in which a journalist writes an article about the staged death of a pop star 10 years ago. The film looks like a biopic, but it is not. The narrative style is a bit messy and therefore the story is sometimes a bit confusing. The zeitgeist of the glam rock period of the mid-'70s is well captured (both through the beautiful costumes and the soundtrack). Easily 3.0 stars.

Disappointing. I expected much more depth and answers to what happened and why. It is certainly a visually interesting film because of the colorful extravaganza and the actors are all convincing rock stars, but the film only seems interested in vague sketches of an era.

Comparisons with Ziggy Stardust quickly fall flat; these are openly gay/bisexual pop stars, not just androgynous, dressed-up types who play with their image. At most you may see similarities in terms of appearance, but then you can also compare Ewan McGregar's Curt Wild with Kurt Cobain. I'm not a fan of the music in question here, but I am a fan of Placebo, so I was pleasantly surprised to see Brian Molko co-perform.

I have the feeling that I have seen a talented director at work, who, however, wasted his talent on a weak, sometimes even absent, script. Then you can say, it's about the music, but usually it didn't move me much. It's all a bit distant and navel-gazing, without really touching on any essential themes, unless it is the prudish homophobia of the time. The image I got was certainly not of a gold mine, but of a weak period in music in which many lazy cover songs were made in between smoking weed. Compare that to the creativity and innovations of the 80's...I'm probably more excited for a film about 80's new wave and synth pop. There were plenty of flickers back then too, so that can't be the reason.
