Uprising plot

"They did the one thing the Nazis never expected. They fought back."

January 18, 1943. Nazi soldiers overrun the Warsaw Ghetto for an assignment they have carried out countless times: to gather Jews to be transported to the Treblinka death camp. But this time it doesn't go as planned. Armed men and women from the Jewish Fighting Organization mingle among the masses of deportees. When the signal sounds, they rush on their assailants in one last desperate attempt.

It's a good movie, interesting, but a bit shaky here and there.

Films with a historical basis often have the problem that a lot has to be told in a relatively short time. Many different characters pass by and storylines or incidents that have been of historical importance are not always necessarily interesting for a movie.

Uprising certainly struggles with these 2 problems. The first half is far too long for my taste, this could easily have been told in 20 minutes. I don't need to be fully explained that the Nazis roamed like animals in the Jewish Gettho of Warsaw and that this led to a resistance group. As a filmmaker, it is best to assume that some things will be known to the viewer. Outline the situation and move on...

The second half is much better in my opinion. In this section, the emphasis is clearly more on the action. It makes the film more exciting and historically interesting because I am more interested in how such a group prepares and carries out actions from their predicament and what the reaction of the Nazis was to this.

In addition, the film lacks a clearly fascinating main character, who is spread over too many characters, making it more difficult for me to empathize with the film. Unfortunately, it remains a somewhat dry record of facts. And then those crazy accents... please say: N

Especially because of the stronger second part still a 3* but Uprising is nowhere near a film like The Pianist.

The revolt of the Jews against the Nazis is strangely underexposed in the holocaust films. Crazy, since Hollywood mainly likes to tell about the exploits that were performed in this black page of history or at least make films about the people who survived. It is in the portrayal of the uprising that the film is most convincing. Unfortunately it takes a while to get there and the first hour and a half is used for subplots and setting up the main plot. Longer than necessary. Still, the uprising scenes are convincing and give a picture of the situation that seemed credible to me. It's not particularly filmed, it's a bit too much of a good TV movie to really show the roughness and filth of this fight, but the end result is sufficient. Due to the lack of bonding to the too large amount of characters that are not really developed, however, a greater emotional value is missing. The actors did not deliver any special performances, although I think that is more due to the script than to their talent.

Yet it is strange that two subplots appealed to me personally even more, namely that of the head of the Jewish Council and the scenes in which Der Ewige Jude is included. Both subjects really deserve their own film and I don't know why they were included in Uprising at all (does a TV movie like this have a mandatory length?), especially since the story around Der Ewige Jude is humorous, with a mainly comical playing Cary Elwes. Fits rather oddly into the rest of the movie.

Above all, it is an interesting historical document that continues to fascinate, but it simply deserves a better, more catchy and more intelligent elaboration. However, it is not a waste of time to look at this.

3*

Oops, I was afraid that the film would become a kind of The Pianist, not so much because of the location but mainly because of the easy way in which the Germans are bad in the beginning, like beating the violinist[/spoiler ].

Fortunately, the film picks up after an hour and you are presented with a battle between the resistance and the enemy. Filmed fairly soberly, but that fits with it, and the longer it lasts, the more exciting it gets, so it's a good build-up. Hank Azaria in the role of the leader is the most eye-catching and knows how to drag me along. (Unfortunately, I can't separate Schwimmer from his Friends role either.)
3 - 3.5
