Ultimately a very slow and less and less interesting film towards the end, then that pace really takes its revenge. I also think that the film is well made, but also very solid without all kinds of nice ideas that I see more often than not at Park. Visually fine, but not more than that. Well acted, but nothing more than that. A nice plot, but nothing more than that. And all that at a too slow pace, which makes the film feel too long and also remains a bit distant. Not bad, but Park could be much better. 3.0*.

Flamboyant movie. Just take the score, including Mahler, that's not exactly minimal. The story is indeed told in a deliberately confusing way, as De Filosoof has already pointed out, so that you also get the feeling that the film is almost over while you still have an hour to go. Nice in itself, on the other hand I agree with those who say that Decision to leave takes too long. Or maybe you should say that the game time has a little too much repetitive and a little too little climactic story elements to keep it really interesting. But the style is beautiful, including skilful use of all kinds of motifs. Halfway through, you'll see a shot of the book stack at the detective's home, which bears the name 'Martin Beck', the iconic Scandinavian detective created by Sjöwall and Wahlöö. A detail for the enthusiast of the genre and I include myself in that.

Can understand why this movie gets high ratings. The film looks very slick with excellent cinematography and camera handling. This is not your average who dunnit or detective film, but a fairly layered psychological thriller with various plot lines. I even had to think about Basic instinct every now and then, if only because of the strange relationship between the Chinese lady and detective. The film was not easy to read. In fact, I found it quite confusing.

That's why the film didn't inspire me enough. Great film in many ways, but narratively I was a bit hungry. Excellent acting though and that made me want to watch further. At times also some funny elements that gave a somewhat strange feeling in the otherwise serious psychological thriller.
