Unconquered plot

Richmond Flowers Sr. is an unpopular attorney general in largely narrow-minded Alabama, as he is a white supporter of racial integration and friends with Martin Luther King. His son Richmond Flowers Jr. was once a sick and weak boy, but has developed into a strong football player. He is actually ashamed of his father and therefore chooses his friends in the other camp, the son of a maverick and a hard and outspoken girlfriend.
