Powerful and tender. Black and white with beautiful scenes and image compositions and overall cinematographically certainly above average.

Tasty surreal twists in a story that pits simple family happiness against ambition for money and fame.

A lot of expression in the performances and appropriate, often mysterious music.

I have varying degrees of satisfaction with Kenji Mizoguchi. He has made some very beautiful films, but also a few that hardly rise above mediocrity. This film about false ambitions and infidelity is one of them for my taste. Apart from the solid camera work and a handful of haunting scenes, the film suffers from overacting, exaggerated drama and poor settings, which at times seem straight out of the 1950s. Shame.

Difficult. My version was one with a dark yellow filter. The image quality could have been a lot better, but the image composition, camera work and the structure of the plot stood out anyway.

A kind of fairy tale with a certain moral. Central themes revolve around love, greed and betrayal and are elaborated on the basis of two farmers. One is a potter, the other wants to make it as a samurai, but unlike the first, is not at all skilled in what he aims for.

You have to love Japanese old cinema to fully absorb this, especially when the theme of the countryside and, say, the 'Middle Ages' with those samurai and warlords is mentioned. Not 100% convinced, but I certainly understand the fans.
