Tuntematon Sotilas plot

"Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning."

The film is about a group of soldiers during the Finnish Continuation War from 1941 to 1944. Finland intervened in the Second World War, as an ally of Germany, against the Soviet Union. The aim was to recapture the Finnish areas that had been lost in the Winter War. Thirty-one-year-old Vilho Koskela roams the Finnish forests with his men. They feel that justice is on their side, on Finland's side in the unequal struggle against Russian superior numbers.

Pretty strong war film. The story is a relatively unknown piece of history and is told from the perspective of the Finns. From the start we fall in the middle of the war and during the trip through the wooded area of Finland one action scene follows another. Sometimes there is repetition, but despite the long running time, the film never gets boring and is and remains exciting all the time. The tension is at its peak at the end scene. Visually, the film looks fine. 3.5/4.0

OK.

Little innovative and especially very long war film from Finland this time. The ideas for the war films are starting to run out so slowly and nowadays it seems that the war films just want to show as much respect as possible for those who have experienced it.

But even then 180 minutes is very long, almost the longest war film I've ever seen. And in those 3 hours the film doesn't really tell you much outside of the normal drama and some war in between. Actually, the entire film focuses on a few soldiers who walk through the forest and sometimes suddenly encounter Russians.

However, the war scenes themselves are successful. Exciting, realistic and raw. If you get hit, you're out. No heroes indeed, and few exploits. Just a tale of the soldiers. I was allowed to, because then you sometimes increase the tension a bit.

But where the first hour often manages to be quite exciting and arrives with some good war moments, the film suddenly became boring in the second hour. But also really boring. Uninteresting side plots, boring and standard drama. At a certain point I could hardly separate the actors and even Finns and Russians.

But also downright boring and uninspired dialogues, few interesting characters, little fear in the soldiers. It all started to feel less and less. It's not until the third hour that the film picks up the pace again and slowly regains focus.

But they were relatively long hours in a war film that is very long. Certainly should have been shortened a bit at boring moments, because all those side plots and drama events did not captivate at all. Would have liked to see more focus on the war. Probably would have magnified the impact itself a bit too.

It is recommended to watch the five-part television version, which is two hours longer than the cinema version. It takes some getting used to the characters and in terms of plot not much happens, but gradually this turns out to be a very strong war series, which can compete with impressive predecessors such as Band Of Brothers and Unsere Mutter, Unsere Vater. Beautifully portrayed, with first-class action scenes and in the subdued moments a beautiful melancholic, dreamy atmosphere. But essentially this is an immersive, grim and raw viewing experience.
