I'd never heard of this Timecode before, but on VRTNU (the online platform of Belgian channel Eén) you can regularly spot a short film, and I'm happy to watch it. In 2017, Timecode was nominated for an Oscar, and in the lead-up to that prestigious award, the short film certainly racked up a fair number of nominations. However, I'm not exactly a huge fan. It's nicely done, but this kind of abstract dance doesn't really interest me, and ultimately, the film doesn't have much going for it beyond that. It does have a nice ending with the new colleague who—upon discovering his predecessors dancing together countless times—dryly points out to his new boss that he's not a very good dancer. It's a smooth watch, of course, thanks to its fifteen-minute running time, but the fuzz escapes me.

3*

A Spanish short film about two parking garage security guards who connect in a unique way. Timecode is a fun film with a surprising twist. With delightful humor, it depicts the attempts of two people to get closer. It's dry, absurd, strange, and cheerful. Passion overcomes the somber, everyday formalities and dull routines. The film allows two people to break free from their daily routines.

Director and writer Juanjo Giménez Peña handles everything quietly, with few words and with sensitivity. Timecode tells a passionate yet dreamy love story set against the absurd backdrop of a parking garage. A cold, structured parking garage where a warm and passionate experience unfolds. The film speaks to the viewer through images that radiate passion. The images speak for themselves. Great.
