In Fairfield, New York, wealthy Tony and Jim Dunlap cherish their happy marriage and envy best friends Bee and Jud McCrea. When news arrives that Jim's former girlfriend and man-guzzler Francesca "Fran" Harper is recently divorced and returns to Fairfield to stay with her brother Jud, Jim casually assures Tony that he's no longer interested in the woman who has him at the altar. abandoned and caused a scandal in its conservative and genteel milieu.
