The Stepping Stone plot

Mary Beresford is the wife of the unambitious clerk Al Beresford. Thanks to Mary's tenacity and carefully calculated social climb, Al is promoted to the position of personal secretary to prominent financier Elihu Knowland. Unfortunately, success goes to Al's head like a narcotic, and he soon alienates everyone in New York, including Mary.
