The Sinking of Van Der Wijck plot
The story of the young man Zainuddin who falls in love with Hayati, a Minangkabau woman. Hayati's family does not accept Zainuddin because he is not 100 percent Minangkabauer, but one of the 'common' people. Hayati eventually marries Aziz, a prominent, wealthy Minangkabauer. Aziz and Hayati move in with Zainuddin. Not long after, Aziz commits suicide. In a suicide note, he asks Zainuddin to take care of Hayati. But Zainuddin still cannot forgive Hayati and sends her back to Sumatra. Hayati departs with the ship 'Van der Wijck'.
